This summer, the United Cooperative Services will give $50,000 in Energy Scholarship Awards to 14 students who belong to the coop. United created their award program in order to encourage and assist its members in continued educational success.
United CEO Ray Beavers explains, “One of the distinguishing characteristics of nonprofit electric cooperatives like United is a stable of member benefits to help those we serve. These scholarships are one of many ways we strive to demonstrate to the members and local communities that we look out for their best interest.”
Over 20 years ago the United Cooperative Services handed out its first scholarships to some very hard working and deserving young members of the community. They included both high school students and students returning to college. The intention of the scholarship, and investing in the youth, was for it to be reinvested in the community.
One set of the scholarships they will hand out is worth $2,500, and they will hand out ten total. Three other scholarships will be handed out, each worth $5,000. And finally, one lucky and deserving student will receive a $10,000 scholarship.
Overall over 850 students in the community have received scholarships from United, and $1 million has been given out to the community. Applicants are competing with students from districts across the 14-county area that United serves. The winners of the scholarships are chosen based on financial need, leadership, community involvement and school activities.
