If you’re a Stephenville home owner who is looking for a way to pass the time this evening, consider heading to Tarleton State University for a free self-defense class for women.
Best of all, you don’t have to be a Tarleton State University student to participate. The class will begin at 6:00 p.m and participants are asked to meet at the Kinesiology Building at the Wisdom Gym and wait in the foyer. Instructors will lead you to the class location. This free event is being put on by the Tarleton State University Police.
The self-defense class will consist of a lecture, discussion, and self-defense techniques that are suitable for women of all ages and abilities. For more information, please call Detective Kristie Bint at (254) 968-9565. There are a variety of techniques that are taught to women for self-defense, but most center on getting them out of an attack situation so they can seek help instead of staying and fighting.
The class will help women understand how to increase their awareness, which will help lead to prevention and reduced risk for being attacked. There are a variety of tactics that a perpetrator will use, like distracting someone with a harmless question, or approaching from behind in a dimly lit parking lot when you are busy getting your kids into the car or loading up shopping bags. According to Lisa Skvarla, chairwoman of the American Women Self Defense Association, “Personal safety just isn’t a priority for women like fitness or annual breast examinations,” so the hope is that Stephenville home owners will take advantage of this free opportunity.
