If you are looking for a family-oriented activity that’s conveniently located near your Stephenville home, you should make a point to visit the Tarleton Planetarium. The Planetarium is located under the copper dome in Tarleton’s Science Building, and the 40-foot planetarium hosts approximately 15,000 visitors every year. Most of the guests are students in grades K-6; however, the array of exhibits and programs offered by the planetarium are appealing to science enthusiasts of all ages.
Programs offered by the planetarium give spectators an interactive experience; they combine video, sound, photographic transparencies and images to bring space to life. The new projector offers state-of-the art graphics combined with high-definition images that enhance the viewing experience. The new Tarleton Science Building opened in 2001, and the planetarium has quickly become its most important feature. The planetarium now features two video projectors, a surround sound system and 18 photographic slide projectors.
The shows at the planetarium are made by appointment only, and it’s important to plan your trip in advance since the intimate setting offered by the venue accommodates only 56 people. The planetarium is hosting Community Science Day on November 6, which will feature free planetarium shows throughout the day, along with robotics demonstrations, a solar-powered amateur radio station, and demonstrations provided by the chemistry club.
