Owning a home has for decades been the ultimate American dream – and ironically in recent times has been a hardship for many Americans. Regardless, it is still a fixture in the daily lives of American families. Owning a home benefits more than just the family that lives there. It supports communities and puts people to work. It is a vital part of the nation’s growth.
The Pew Research Center released a study that showed 81% of adults agree that buying a home is the best long-term investment that a person can make. And actually, 81% of renters also had the same sentiment. Even though many homes have lost value in recent years, homeowners have over $6 trillion in home equity. That equity goes into the economy through health expense, education, home improvements that increase the home’s value, and retirement funding.
Regardless of the housing crisis that Americans have been dealing with, those surveyed still thought that retirement savings programs and home ownership were the best investments. So much so 80% of the surveyed population agreed that they would advise a family member to buy real estate. Home ownership creates a feeling of being part of a community, and becomes part of a lifestyle. The fact is that owning a home is one of the building blocks of creating a strong community and work force. It’s more than a commodity – it’s a core value.
