As the population in Dallas’ downtown district continues to grow, there is a corresponding increase in demand for better public transportation within the city. Young professionals moving to the area are eager to live in a city where owning a car isn’t a necessity, and Dallas transportation officials are working toward increasing the accessibility of the public transit system.
Next spring, Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is expected to release a mobile ticketing system that will send tickets to passengers’ smart phones, and allow them to purchase DART passes via credit card. The new system will also allow passengers to purchase transit products in one fell swoop instead of visiting multiple websites for transit cards.
The new phone app was developed by Unwire, a Danish company, and DART is Unwire’s first client in the United States. Once tickets are purchased, passengers will be able to display both a physical ticket and a QR code on their smart phones to before boarding DART transit. If the transportation initiative catches on, experts predict that mobile ticketing will become a nationwide trend.
